Travis

I guess there’s that. Starting tomorrow, I’ll come in to do some more paperwork, and I’ll be Sheriff Daniels. The meeting was hardly what I would call an interview. I’m pretty sure even if I barely wanted the job, they would have shoved it down my throat.

The first thing I did after I left the building was text my girl, and that’s exactly what she is. Mine.

Me: I hope you’re ready to celebrate.

I figure I’ll have to wait until I hear back from Raelynn, but my phone vibrates right away with her response.

Raelynn: I knew it! Congratulations! Come to the shop. It’s dead, and I have a surprise for you!! Muah!

God damn this woman, what she does to me.

Me: Thanks, baby. I have a couple stops to make, but then I’ll be on my way to you.

My first stop is Nighthawk Security. Slade told me he and Taylor would be there, and I need to make sure I can take over the lease of her place until I figure out where I want to stay permanently. If I had my way, it would be anywhere Raelynn is, her fixer-upper of a house included.

It’s cute from a distance, and you can tell she really loves her place judging by what she’s done so far with the place and how she’ll be working on it this weekend. Which is part of the reason I’m stopping by Slades’ too. Raelynn mentioned she and her parents were going to be painting her house this weekend, but first it would need to be pressure washed, then they’d start in on it. My new schedule may put some kinks in my plans, but I know where I can get help.

Being in town square means everything is within walking distance. So, I left my vehicle at the hotel I was staying at, walked to my interview, and now I’m at Slade’s office.

I step inside, take my sunglasses off, and nod at the secretary.

“Hey, Travis, nice seeing you again. How can I help you?”

“I’m looking for Slade.” Shit, Kellie seems to have come out of her shell a little bit. The last time I was here she was shy, meek, and barely acknowledging me. Let alone looking me in the eyes.

“I’ll get ahold of him right now. I think he’s in the office with Taylor.” That is not something I want to walk in on. Thinking about that gives me the heebie-jeebies. “Thanks.” I turn around and take my seat while she gets ahold of him.

My thoughts go back to this weekend and how I’m hoping to wrangle the masses to get things taken care of out at Raelynn’s.

“He said to go on back,” I hear Kellie say.

“Thanks.” I heave myself up off the chair I was sitting in and walk slowly back to his office.

I clear my throat while opening the door.

“Hey, big brother.” Taylor is up off Slade’s lap, leaping towards me for a hug.

“Hey, sis, what are you up to today?”

“About to head to work, but I did stop at a certain person’s bakery and get spoiled.
